It’s an especially endearing sight to see children washing their hands. As adults, we feel we are doing our job well, teaching a vital skill and keeping our children healthy. Hand washing is in the spotlight even more these days because of the H1N1 virus. We are admonished to wash our hands several times a day to help stop the spread of this disease, and all germs, to ourselves and others. Hand washing is reclaiming its vital role – first advocated in the 1800s in Europe – as the first line of defense against disease transmission. I recently joined the Natural Products Association (www.naturalproductsassoc.org) committee on Home Care product standards. The committee is working on a draft standard for defining the term “natural” as applied to household cleaners and laundry products. Manufacturers from the largest to the smallest, the oldest to the newest entries are on the committee, so there are a ton of different viewpoints represented. Crafting a consensus on a standard in this situation really is an art. The standard that is emerging though is pretty darn good, but of course it is a compromise. Read the rest of this post»
Yes, I know I wrote about toxic anti-bacterial soaps recently, but we keep learning more about the nastiness of the chemical triclosan, so I’m here once again to implore – please don’t let your kids wash with antibacterial soaps containing triclosan!
