Green Soaps and Detergents – The Healthier Clean

We love being clean. We love being healthy (and we love those we love being healthy). We love a planet that is healthy and clean.  Simply put, we’re in the business of creating new ways to get things clean without adding any new toxic stuff to the world.

This is our guiding principle when it comes to creating great, green cleaning products.

If you look back at the history of washing you’ll see that it’s tied in with the idea of being healthy. Humans can be a little slow, but we finally figured out that clean = healthy sometime in the 1800s. So, since washing up was arguably the biggest health advancement ever, why, in the 20th century, did companies start manufacturing soaps and detergents that make you, and our planet, sick? Full of chemicals that never belonged on a body – or in a river? Excuse us, but…toxic cleaners? Isn’t that kind of an oxymoron? Aren’t cleaners meant to…get rid of toxins?

We just kept shaking our heads. And then we realized that our job is not to answer deep questions about human nature. Our job is to make green soaps and detergents that get you, your dishes, your baby’s diapers and the rest of your laundry very clean. While they help keep you, yours, and this earth healthy.

So we’ve done that (although we can and will always look for ways to be better). And we’ve done it by keeping the promise of the Three P’s.

The 3 P’s – Our Promise for Posterity

What are the 3 P’s? you ask. Well, they are…

  • PLANT-BASED PRODUCTS: so green we’re vegan!
Our cleaners are based on things that grew out of the earth and that, therefore, biodegrade harmlessly back to the earth – after they have gotten you clean. In fact, Mountain Green  products are free of harsh chemicals, phosphates, phosphorous, enzymes, PEG,  polycarboxylates, benzene, cocamide DEA, chlorine, SLS, parabens, artificial dyes and  synthetic fragrances. In fact, all of our ingredients are listed on CleanGredients.com, a unique partnership  between GreenBlue, the EPA, and the green chemical industry that helps purchasers to   identify green products. Check ‘em out. (And for the details, see: Coming Clean)
  • OUR PLANT: that’s right, we formulate it all HERE in our carbon neutral plant.
It’s important to us (and you) that we keep close control over our ingredients and our  methods. That’s why, when you walk out of our office door, you are in our formulation plant and lab. We don’t use third party formulators to create our clean green products –  not because we don’t trust them, but because, well, let’s say we trust us when it comes to keeping a promise we make to you. You’ll be glad to know that the place we make the products you use is pollution- free and carbon neutral. Everything is recycled. AND, we are constantly looking into how we can improve our processes. Why? Because what good is giving kids a clean  healthy start in life if you don’t help give them a clean green planet to live that life on?
  • OUR POUCHES: less material, less energy, mo’ bettah
The simplest way to create less waste is to use less stuff that turns into it. Being simple  folk, we like that approach. Which is why, at Mountain Green, we sell you a bottle…once. Afterwards you can buy our handy refill pouches, which use 85% less  material and energy to make – so they create 85% less waste. In fact, if you have a bottle or container handy, don’t even buy the product in a bottle the first time. Go straight to the pouches. And, yes, we will continue to look into ways to limit and improve packaging.

Clean Wash VS Greenwash

We live by the maxim that, “It all comes out in the wash.” By which we mean, you can try to hide your dirty laundry under a pile of green words, and paint your labels green, but as with people, it’s what inside that counts. We think greenwashing shows a certain disrespect for the intelligence of your customers – that’s you. Not to mention a disrespect for the ground we walk on, water we drink, and the air we breathe. So we promise you that we will concentrate on providing great green cleaners that are very healthy for humans and their planetary home. And we will not concentrate on a bunch of green verbiage that does not accurately reflect – or that obscures – the nature of our products.

Think we could do a better job at that? Or at anything? Read on, because…

You’re Invited to Join In the Fun

Green does not mean bleak and glum. After all, we’re all in this for a frolicking future. Around here, we like good clean fun and a healthy sense of humor – we call it being Light Green. After all, we’re doing great things and that feels rather, well, good – it makes us smile, even laugh. And we would like to do even better things. That’s where you can come in. If you have a Great Green Idea for how things could be better, let us know. How? Call us, email us, blog us, send a (recycled) paper airplane… We like to invite you into the fun, too, with contests, games and trivia – see Good Clean Fun!

The Family That’s Green Together

Mountain Green is a family-owned, family-run company. See, we’re not just another faceless corporation. The three of us – Ed, Sue and our daughter Alison – are here every day, fighting the good clean fight. In fact, Sue still takes pride in answering your questions personally. So if you ever need to speak to an owner, to share your concern or great idea…we’re here. Shoot us an email or give us a call.

The Create a Tagline For MG Contest

The other day, we were brainstorming. And we thought, what is it that makes Mountain Green cleaners so gentle on skin and the environment, and how can we capture that in a line? Well, up popped, Mountain Green: gentle, yet strong. Now as taglines go, that’s pretty dumb, kinda lame and more than a little cliché. But fun. Yes, we know our tagline is “The healthier clean”, but wouldn’t it be fun to have alternates? So if you have a Better Tagline, send it in. also, if you have a dumber, lamer, sillier tagline, so much the better. You might win free stuff. It’s good clean fun. We’ll put entries together every now and then and let our Mountain-Greenies vote on them. If yours wins, we’ll post it on the Home Page, right up there in the banner, with your name and a picture of you, you and your kiddo(s), whatever – just remember to keep it clean.

Enter your better (or dumber, or sillier) tagline here.
