What is the best way to clean my cloth diapers?
Cloth diapers can be a great resource if you have a little one with sensitive skin as disposable diapers can sometimes cause major irritation! But washing cloth diapers correctly also goes a long way towards preventing discomfort for you and your baby. Because there are so many types of cloth diapers made from everything from bamboo to cotton, hemp to wool, it is important to follow the washing instructions that come with your particular brand carefully. What works for one brand may not work for another! That said, here are a few tips for using Mountain Green to get the most from your cloth diapers:
- Repelling is, for obvious reasons, a BIG deal with cloth diapers. Detergent additives that don’t rinse completely leave a residue behind that can build up, cause irritation, and lead to repelling. By and large, Mountain Green products do not contain these additives (i.e. optical brighteners, tallow, petroleum surfactants, dyes, perfumes, etc.) but, our Ultra Baby detergent does contain essential oils. These essential oils do have the potential to build up, so for that reason, we recommend Baby Free & Clear detergent for your cloth diapers.
- To be on the safe side, I wouldn’t even use fabric softener but if you must, (you know who you are, softener addicts!) again, Baby Free & Clear. Same for the dryer sheets, and remember not to over-dry!
- It is important not to overdose on detergent, especially if you have a front loading machine because they use less water. Use as much water as you can to wash the diapers and start out with 1 ounce of detergent. When they come out of the machine, they shouldn’t smell like anything. If they are still soapy, try again with ½ ounce detergent.
- If you spot treat a stain with detergent, that okay, as long as you decrease the amount of detergent you add to the wash by that amount, otherwise you will be overdosing!
As you can see, there are a lot of variables when it comes to laundry. At the end of the day, it all comes down to the type of washer and diapers you have, so make sure you read the instructions for both carefully. Good luck and happy diapering!
